A graduate of the
International Institute for Secular
Humanistic Judaism (IISHJ) in
Farmington Hills, Rabbi Chalom was
ordained a rabbi in 2001 and joined
Rabbi Tamara Kolton to lead the con-
gregation founded 40 years ago by
Rabbi Sherwin Wine.
Rabbi Chalom has been involved in
the synagogue's adult education pro-
gram as well as the Birmingham
Temple's school, bar mitzvah prepara-
tion program and in IISHJ leadership.
He has brought controversial current
issues to the community through
Voice of Reason programming and
weekly forums.
"The Birmingham Temple has been
a congregational home to my wife, .
Alison, and me since before we were
born, and deciding to leave has been
very difficult," Rabbi Chalom said.
"The Birmingham Temple family
includes some of the most interesting,
genuine, caring people I have ever
met. And while I look forward to the
opportunity to lead and build Kol
Hadash, the Birmingham Temple will
always remain my home."
Birmingham Temple President Bill
Trapp said, "I think I speak for the
entire congregation when I say how
saddened I am to see Rabbi Chalom
leave the Birmingham Temple. At the
same time, however, this is a great
opportunity for Rabbi Chalom, and
for our movement, to extend the phi-
losophy of Humanistic Judaism to
another congregation that is looking
•for a leader," he said.
"Rabbi Chalom has played a crucial
role in transitioning the Birmingham
Temple into a new era of leadership,"
Rabbi Tamara Kolton said. "His new
congregation will come to love and
value his quick wit and sound intellect
— attributes that we will miss. But as
the Birmingham Temple embarks on
this new transition, I am confident
that its future will be as bright as its
past."
