On the contrary, it's a very strong mir-
ror because so many families in Israel
are trying to just survive. People think
that all we do all the time is deal with
the conflict. It's not like that."
Broken Wings does not play like a
political film — especially compared to
most Israeli films that receive distribu-
tion in the U.S. — but Bergman slips
in a few zingers. In class one day, Maya
lets fly with the observation that her
mother's been working the same job for
20 years and can't afford childcare.
And the cause of the key death in
the film — don't fuss, I'm giving away
less than you think — is absurdly and .
patently ridiculous.
"We are so used to [the fact that] if
someone dies in an Israeli film, he will
die in the conflict," Bergman explains.
"And this is saying, 'Shut up with
this hero type of filmmaking ... [This]
is your hero: A normal family trying
to go through a normal day, trying to
survive a day with a stupid death, a
stupid death ... and there's too many
stupid deaths in this country."' II

includes "Shir Lismoach (Malki's
Song)," which was written by Israeli
teen Malki Roth just months before the
flute and guitar player was killed during
a restaurant bombing in Jerusalem. The
song was recorded for the CD by the
duo of Yehuda! and Yishay Lapidot, the
Israeli star who heads Malki's favorite
band, Oif Simchas.

Family-Israel Emergency Solidarity
Fund and private donations. All the
songs relate to themes of Israel, Jewish
unity and the enduring hope for peace.
