We Get Questions Q : I just returned from our neighbor's visitation at a Christian funeral home. There were hundreds of floral arrangements. Why is it that flowers seem to be so rare at a Jewish funeral? A: For Jewish funerals, there is no "visitation" before the ceremony and that accounts for the lack of flowers. Generations ago, visitation occurred at the deceased's home. Prior to modern embalming techniques — still prohibited in Jewish funerals — flowers not only beautified a home, but also protected against any unpleasant odors from having the deceased lying there for days.
