Q.

A Great Wing Fit

MIKE ROSENBAUM

Special to the Jewish News

Iff athieu Schneider
enjoyed a stellar season
in his first full year with
.
the Red Wings.
Schneider was sixth on the team with
46 points (14 goals, 32 assists). He
was ninth in
scoring among
all NHL defense-
men.
Schneider
played in all situ-
ations and played
a lot — his
24:29 of ice time
per game and his
plus-22 rating
were both second
on the team to
Schneider
defense partner
Nicklas
Lidstrom.
Schneider played in 78 of 82 games,
while injuries to other key players put
more responsibility on Schneider's shoul-
ders. "I got more ice time," Schneider
says, "and probably more penalty kill
than I would've gotten. With Derian
Hatcher being out, there were a lot of
minutes that needed to be eaten up.
"Getting a chance to play with Nick
has been great for me. It's been a real
great challenge playing against other
teams' top lines every night."
On previous teams, Schneider was
generally the top offensive defenseman.
Although he led all Wings' defensemen
in scoring, he didn't have to carry the
load alone. Skating with Lidstrom and
other offensively talented players "takes
pressure off," Schneider says.
"You can play a more rounded game
when there are so many different guys
who can score and you have guys on
the blue line who can score. We've
definitely been given a pretty free rein
here as defensemen to jump up in the
rush and create offense.
"But for the most part, defense
comes first. It always has in my game,
and it always will. The offensive part
of it, a lot of it's always come on the
power play. This year, I've probably
got more points even-strength, but
that just comes from playing with
other great players."
Schneider, who played 13 games for
the Wings after Detroit acquired him
from Los Angeles last season, feels

more comfortable with the Wings
than he did last year.
"It's a much different feeling going
through the whole season with this
team, going through the ups and downs,
the injuries. Its really been a great year.
There's some high expectations coming
into the playoffs, but I think on the
heels of last year's disappointing (first-
round playoff) loss we're very highly
motivated and very focused right now."
Al Levine helped the Tigers sweep
their season-opening series in
Toronto. Levine played in two of the
three games and pitched a toial of two
scoreless innings.
Birmingham Seaholm senior Sam
Siegel will be a preferred football
walk-on at Division 1-A Boston

College this fall. Siegel, a quarterback
at Seaholm, will likely play defensive
back in college.
Sophomore for-
ward/midfielder
Michelle Ellis scored
the game-winning
goal during Walled
Lake Western's first
pre-season soccer
scrimmage last
Siegel
month. Ellis led
Western's JV squad
in goals last season.
Detroit Country Day junior Aaron
Hodari opened the lacrosse season
with a game-winninrovertime goal to
beat U-D High, 6-5. The winning
goal was Aaron's second of the game.
Hodari was an All-Stater for last year's
state championship team.
The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit volleyball squad finished 1-9,
including a victory against Ecorse.
JAMD spring sports include baseball,
coached by Larry Garon, and girls soc-
cer, coached by Ed Dudek
Some of Detroit's Maccabi teams
are still looking for competitors.
Athletes between the ages of 13-16 as
of Aug. 1 can try out for the table _
tennis, golf or bowling teams. Girls
ages 13 or 14 can try out for tennis.
The games will be held in Columbus,
Ohio, Aug. 8-13. Interested athletes
should contact Karen Gordon at
(248) 432-5500 or
