unconventional projects," says Greene, author, editor
and critic who writes about the way the play caught
Loners attention.
"In many ways, Lortel was more of a landlord
than a producer, but it was her theater that showed
the revival for seven years — at that time the
longest-running musical performed Off Broadway."
Greene explains how Lortel, who established
billing agreements to keep her name as producer,
offered a matinee schedule to introduce new plays.
She is memorialized through the Lucille Lortel
Awards, presented annually to honor the best play
and musical of the Off Broadway season.

Lucille Lortel pro-
duced the "The
Threepenny Opera"
revival in the 1950s
that claimed the record
at one time for the
longest-running O
Broadway musical.

Call For Creativity

Actor-musician Kahn plays Crookfinger Jake and
also the accordion for the Ann Arbor production.
He additionally appears as a street singer.
"I think Weill and Brecht answered a cry for cre-
ativity at a time when Germany was in upheaval,"
says Kahn, who graduated from the musical theater
program at the University of Michigan in 2001 and
appeared in many productions of the Jewish
Ensemble Theatre as he was growing up.
"Besides having wonderful music, the play throws
convention out the window. It's really very entertaining."
Kahn travels across the country to perform his
original folk music, which is available at:
www.cdbaby.com He also calls attention. to his
self-produced recordings Pegboard Blues and River
Mouth while staying in Ann Arbor to prepare for
the play.
"I think Weill and Brecht wanted to change the-
ater the way others want to change society," Kahn
says. "I love the music and find it a change from
what I've been performing on guitar and piano. El

Daniel Kahn is a
