Israeli Father Of 6 Slain
Jerusalem/JTA — An Israeli father of six
was killed in a terrorist infiltration in the
West Bank. Hamas claimed responsibili-
ty for last Friday night's attack on the
settlement of Avnei Hefetz by an 18-
year-old Palestinian from nearby
Tulkarm.
The terrorist sneaked into the settle-
ment and fired into the home of Kobi
Zaga, wounding his 14-year-old daugh-
ter. Zaga rushed out, pistol drawn, only
to be gunned down on his doorstep.
Israeli troops shot the terrorist dead, but
the army believes an accomplice got
away. Hamas called the April 2 attack
revenge for Israel's killing last month of
its founder, Sheik Ahmed Yassin.
Later Sunday, Israeli commandos in
the West Bank city of Tulkarm killed a
Palestinian believed to have mastermind-
ed the deadly attack.
Rites and Rights
Jerusalem/JTA —Religious Jews sacri-
ficed a paschal goat outside Jerusalem's
Old City after being turned away from
the Temple Mount.
Dozens of members of the messianic
Temple Mount Faithful attended
Monday's ceremony on the Mount of
Olives, in which a goat was sacrificed in
accordance with Jewish law and divided
up to be eaten at the evening Passover
seder. The Temple Mount Faithful want
to bring in the messianic era by building
the Third Temple inJerusalem.
Police routinely reject the group's
requests to hold religious rites on the
Temple Mount, fearing Muslims
would see it as a provocation.
Traditionally, Jewish practice calls for a
paschal lamb to be sacrificed at Passover,

This practice is generally no longer
acceptable to most Jews.
German State Bans Scarves
Bonn/JTA — A German state banned
the wearing of Muslim head scarves in
public schools.
The law in the conservative southwest-
ern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, ban-
ning Muslim. teachers from covering
their heads, arose after Germany's high
court ruled last year that Muslim head
coverings were allowed unless states acted
otherwise, Fox News reported.
A local leader of the left-wing Green
Party, Winfried Kretschmann, said that if
the law stands, then it also should be
applied to "the nun's habit, the yarmulke
and the cross on the deacon's lapel."
Montreal School Arson Probed
Montreal/JTA Arson destroyed the
library at a Jewish school in Montreal.
Anti-Semitic notes were found near the
site of Monday's attack on the United
Talmud Torah elementary school.
Police and Jewish community officials
are discussing ways to ensure safety at
Jewish institutions after the incident,
which occurred after several recent anti-
Semitic incidents in Toronto. A local res-
ident who was awoken by the fire taped
some of the incident using his digital
camera.

Disengagement Plan Detailed
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel plans to remove
all Gala settlements and four in the West
Bank. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
detailed his plan to disengage Israel from
the Palestinians for the first time
Monday, in pre-Passover media inter-
views.
"There are still derails left to work out,
but I believe our intention is to leave all
of them," Sharon told Army Radio,
referring to Gaza's 21 settlements.
He added: "We are talking about four
settlements in Samaria," referring to the
northern West Bank. Ha'aretz named the
four West Bank settlements slated for
removal as Kadim, Ganim, Sah-nur and
Homesh.
Territories Sealed In Alert
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's closure of the
West Bank and Gaza Strip will continue
through most of April.
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told the
Israeli Cabinet on Sunday that the clo-
sure, imposed last month amid fears
Palestinian terrorists would try to avenge
the assassination of Hamas founder
Sheik Ahmed Yassin, would remain in
place until after Israel's Independence
Day on April 26.

A Killing In Candles
Jerusalem/JTA An Israeli is making a
killing by manufacturing memorial can-
dles for assassinated Hamas leader Sheik
Ahmed Yassin.
Don Avni, a candlemaker from Mitzpe
Ramon, said Monday that the Israeli
airstrike that killed the terrorist leader
last month saved his business. "Thanks
to these candles, my factory managed to
survive financially," Avni told Ma'ariv.
He said the 3-foot-high candles bear-
ing Yassin's image were selling briskly in
the West Bank and Gaza Strip. "It is
absurd that because of Yassin my factory
will not close down, but what can you
do when the Israeli market is dead?"
