Stitch 'n Bitch, The Knitter's Handbook
by Debbie Stoller (Workman
Publishing, New York) transforms the
image of knitting from a grandmother-
ly pastime to the latest hobby for
today's trendsetters of all ages.
Filled with clever prose and catchy
chapter titles such as "Knitty Gritty"
and "Purl, Too," this book provides the
modern knitter with everything she
needs to know to "get her knit on."
There are sections on yarn, needles,
patterns and all the basic stitches.
Stoller founded the country's first
"Stitch 'n Bitch" knitting group in
2000, which still meets weekly in the
same New York City (*Ale. She includes
a section on how to start your own
"Stitch 'n Bitch" group, a list of knit-
ting Web sites, software programs,
organizations, books and many other
resources.
There is even a list of past and pres-
ent celebrity knitters, which includes
Debra Messing, Dorothy Parker,
Madeleine Albright, Monica Lewins
Whoopi Goldberg, Isaac Mizrahi,
Goldie Hawn, Sarah Jessica Parker,
Winona Ryder and Marilyn Monroe.
When she isn't knitting, Stoller serves
as the editor-ir -chief of the new-wave
feminist magaine Bust, which she also

founded. She has a doctorate in the
psychology of women from Yale
University and is the co-author of the
book The Bust Guide to the New Girl
Order.
