don't really realize you're doing it."
She said in elections and other
decisions her BBYO chapter makes,
she will be more likely to keep in
mind that everyone is similar in
that they have strengths and weak-
nesses and should be valued and
respected for their contributions.
"I think everyone should have
gone because it helps you realize
your differences and know that
you're not alone even though you
have those differences, that people
have the same differences as you,"
she said.
One memorable Challenge Day
activity had participants crossing a
tape line on the gymnasium floor.
The activity, titled "Power Shuffle,"
required students and adults to
examine their relationship to
oppression and to look at it in a
different light. They crossed the
line in "groups of oppression," rec-
ognizing various factors and types
of discrimination that affected their
lives.
One Echad member said more
people crossed the line than she
imagined and that the activity rein-
forced for her the importance of
tolerance.
"I think I learned that a lot of
people have had hard times and to
try to be more sympathetic toward
people — or if someone's angry and
I don't know why, not to get angry
at them also," she said.
While many of the chapter's
members could not attend Sunday's
event, one who did said she hopes
others in her chapter and in other
chapters have the opportunity to
participate the next time Challenge
Day comes to town.
"I think it'd be cool if a lot of
other chapters went to it because I
think it's a really beneficial pro-
gram, and I think that other chap-
ters should get to see that, too," she
said.
Participating Echad chapter mem-
bers were Julia Upfal, 15; Julianna
Scheiman, 14; David Zimet, 15;
and Steffe Harwood, 14.
Gloria Zimet said BBYO
Michigan is considering using the
program with its groups. High
schools within 21 school districts in
Michigan and Ohio have had
Challenge Day events. II
