"I believe in a very strong public
sector," says Kahn, who gives formal
lectures on topics that range from
power to resistance. "I think that's
important to having a democracy."
Kahn turns 60 just eight days after his
show at the Ark. When he came up with
his new CD title, We're Still Here, he rec-
ognized how much it applied to him.
"I didn't set out to do a birthday
album, but when I look at it, I realize
it is a CD by someone looking back at
his life and work from a distance,"
says Kahn, who has included English,
Hebrew and Spanish lyrics. "It's also
about someone who is still very much
involved with issues.
"What has given momentum to my
life as a performer is that so many of
the songs have been done by other
artists, and the songs get around
much more than I do. A lot of people
who don't know my name know my
songs, and I have enough songs to fill
another 30 or 40 CDs." E.

with the civil rights movement and
learned organizing as an apprentice.
"I was always someone who just .
loved music. When I was in my late
20s, I started writing songs. A friend
of mine began a record company and
asked to record mine. I was 30 when
my first album came out and later was
invited to perform at a festival in
Chicago. My career just grew, and this
[is] my 14th CD."
Kahn, who appears at some 15 con-
certs a year, has toured the United
States and Europe. Many of his record-
ings have been made with companies
based overseas. A large number of his
"Gone,
songs — such as "Aragon
Gonna Rise Again" and "Wild Rose of
the Mountain" — have been recorded
by other artists, more than 100 in all,
including Dick Gaughan, Robin and
Linda Williams and June Tabor.
The singer-songwriter, married to
feminist philosopher Elizabeth
Minnich and the father of three grown
children, says he does most of his writ-
ing while driving. Ideas for songs
come into his head, and he pulls over
to write them down.
When he is not busy with social
causes as part of his career, Kahn gives
time to other social causes, often relat-
ed to the Jewish community. He is
founder of the Jewish Fund for Justice,
a national- organization that fights
poverty, and he has ties to Jewish
