_r E Dana's Family Affair Bat mitzvah is family's latest simchah at Ann Arbor's Beth Israel Congregation. SHARON LUCKERMAN Ann Arbor D ana Margolis' bat mitzvah was a "rather unique situation," said Rabbi Robert Dobrusin of Beth Israel Congregation in Ann Arbor. "Her family has been involved here over the generations. Her father, Barry, celebrated his bar mitzvah at Beth Israel when he was 13; and her mother, Elaine, recently had her adult bat mitz- vah here. "There's a real sense of mishpachah in this con- gregation," said the rabbi, who also officiated at Dana's baby naming. But Dana didn't just ride on her connections. She studied hard, Rabbi Dobrusin said. Since becoming a bat mitzvah March 20, Dana has been asked to be one of the congregation's "lay cantors" for part of the Shabbat service. Dana's mitzvah projects have alsO been a family affair. Beerman. 14, joined Dana for one of her mitzvah projects through the Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit, spend- ing time with seniors at a convalescent center on Christmas Day. "The elderly there didn't have any family nearby, and they needed comfort and help on this special day," said Dana, who also studies piano and dance. She made donations to Jewish organi- zations and to Myasthenia Gravis because of "a special relative" who has the disease. One of Dana's most meaningful mitz- vah projects, Dana said, was through Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County. She volunteered to spend time with a Jewish couple who came to the United States five years ago from Russia.
