and plum trees. Sixteen Bradford
pear trees, as well as yellow for-
sythia, surround the tennis
courts, which have spotlights for
evening drama.
A rock wall with a waterfall
cascades to a man-made pond
stocked with koi, turtles and
frogs. This is where Debbie cre-
ated a shade garden, populated
with Japanese iris, ajuga, peren-
nial geraniums, dianthus, astilbe,
veronica, natural phlox, spider-
wort, allium, day lilies, butter-
cups, hosta, and ligularia. Next to
it is a putting green.
Nearby, Debbie has her day-
lily garden, which is sprinkled
with wild daisies and a strawber-
ry patch that snakes throughout
the flowers. "I'm testing out all
of the best colors of day lilies,"
she says. "I love large clumps of
the same color." In the fall,
sedum, autumn joy and chrysan-
themums provide the color. The
strawberries, plentiful with fruit,
are a magnet for her three chil-
dren and their friends. "We eat
them straight from the garden,"
she says. "I don't spray them or
anything."
Debbie's goal around the
swimming pool was to eliminate
messy, large-leaf trees, so she
concentrated on exotic plants and
a cutting garden. She has magno-
lia trees, rhododendrons, pink
carpet roses that bloom all sum-
mer, astilbe, pink Veronica,
hydrangea trees, clematis and
snapdragons.
She singled out pink flowers
around her patios, utilizing two
kinds of ground cover with the
same color pink, ornamental
strawberry, carpet roses, dianthus,
and ornamental peach trees and
weeping cherry trees.
"It takes a good three years to
get a full established look," says
Debbie, whose favorite tip is to
buy perennials after they've
bloomed and are on clearance at
garden stores. "You have to be a
patient gardener."
"My goal when planting was to
have all of the areas flowering all
of the time, and I wouldn't have to
do anything but enjoy it." ❑
