The theme of their project was al tifrosh min hatzibur, meaning "do not separate from the community," a saying from Pirkei Avot, (Ethics of Our Fathers.) The class worked with local artist Judy Vine as part of the Artists in the Schools grant program sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. "By using each other as drawing mod- els, the students explored who makes up their Jewish community," Vine said. "By painting in an impasto style (using thick paint), the image of a fresh bagel smeared with cream cheese and jam, or lettuce and tomato, they can artistically under- stand that being Jewish is also a visceral thing — one physically feels being Jewish." Each student created six pieces of art. They worked with soft pastel on paper and fabric, and acrylic paint on paper and canvas. Parents and the other classes had a chance to see the different types of artis- tic styles at the exhibition, where stu- dents also explained their artwork. — Keri Guten Cohen, stag development editor Hours: Mon-Sat 11-2 Closed Sundays 623940 SOME OF THE NATION'S BEST ARTISTS PUT THEIR ACCENT ON ART national spring art show Saturday, April 3rd, 10 AM - 6 PM Sunday, April 4th, 10 AM - 5 PM University of Michigan's Indoor Track Building • 1000 State St. $5.00 Admission • Free Parking APRIL 3RD & 4TH 2004 Contact Ron Beahn 330 896 9498 or rbeahn@neo.rr.coni - Hope Peskin-Shepherd of West Bloomfield poses in front of one of her pieces of art. - Services of Michigan Public Media 823590 3/26 2004 69
