And what if it's a past you can't forget no matter
how hard you try? Austria's official submission in
the Foreign Language Film category at the recent
Academy Awards tries to tell us.

Set in Vienna and New York in the 1980s, this remarkable
film revolves around a quartet of Holocaust-scarred char-
acters still working out their loss, self-pity, anger and guilt.
The first is a cynical Jew, an infant when his father died at
Auschwitz, the second a middle-aged 1V journalist whose
father was a notorious SS doctor, and the third an old man
known as the Skull Cracker, an infamous but unpunished SS
officer. Finally, there's Hermann Geburtig, a successful
Jewish composer who has never returned to Vienna and
the only living witness who can identify the Skull Cracker.
The stage is set! Uncompromising and occasionally shock-
ing, this astonishingly mature film recognizes that reconcili-
ation is the basis for healing and forgiveness. Don't miss it!
