Gerstein sees the disinfectant he's helped perfect
used to murder interred Jews, he decides to act. As
he fights for truth, he and his priest ally, Riccardo,
realize that committing treason for the sake of
humanity and committing heresy to thwart geno-
cide are ultimately the same. They beg the Vatican
to condemn the uncovered atrocities, but ultimate-
ly the film incriminates the Nazis, the Church and
humanity itself. A stunning achievement.

George Singleton titled his review "Believe the
Unbelievable." And you will. This movie's Oscar-
winning director, Aviva Slesin, was smuggled in a
suitcase to a family that kept her for over two
years knowing that those guilty of aiding Jews
would suffer their fate and be shot, hanged or
sent to concentration camps. Then, re-united
with her mother, Aviva said, "Take your Jewish
hands off me!" as the woman tried to remove
the lice covering the child's body. These are bit-
ter lessons about what courage, love and self-
identity truly mean. Can a film give you wisdom?
Maybe this one can.
