Heather Neff of Eastern Michigan
University.
"What are the expectations, the
aspirations the students bring with
them? What cultural values do their
parents expect them to maintain?
The less we know about various
forms of religious tradition, the less
effective we are as teachers."
The event, part of the Religious
Diversity Institute (RDI), was made
possible by a grant from the
Community Foundation of
Southeastern Michigan It is spon-
sored by the. Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit,.
Oakland County Superintendent's
Association and National
Conference for Community and
Justice.
Two other programs of the RDI,
which continue through the school
year, are Journey to Understanding
for seventh-grade students and
Pathways to Understanding, a series
of teacher workshops.
Bettie Barton, who taught eco-
nomics in the Walled Lake
Consolidated Schools, said human
beings are more than the sum of
their religious and ethnic differences.
"I'm Muslim; I'm black," she said.
"But sometimes, what I am is
tired. You don't even have to go out
of your home to have religious dif-
ferences," Barton said, remembering
a Thanksgiving at which the partici
pants ran the gamut from born-
again to agnostic.
"I like this quote from Mother
Teresa," she said, '"What can we do
for world peace? Go home and love
