Greenbaum said.
"There were nearly 60 of us and
we had our own dining room -- and
our singing could have raised the
roof. People kept stopping us to ask
what kind of a group we were."
In a family where travel has
become so automatic, spontaneity is
not uncommon. After Fayga and
David flew to New Jersey for their
grandson's bris eight years ago,
Michael suddenly decided he could
join them. "He just jumped into his
car with two of his sons and drove
all the way," Fayga said.
We were sitting in the living
room of our daughter's home and we
saw a guy come up onto the front
porch and I said, 'That guy looks
just like Michael.' And it was."

Staying Power

Happily, Jill Greenbaum doesn't see
a light at the end of the simchah-
tunnel. "Right now, we are in the
thick of the bar/bat mitzvah phase,"
she said. But since the oldest
cousins are now in their early 20s, I
would imagine weddings will also be
added to the program soon."
Having recently returned from a
mid-February bar mitzvah in New
York, the Detroit group's next trip is
a family celebration in New Jersey at
the end of March.
"Since they don't live near us,
when we see them, it's a lot of fun,"
said Naomi Greenbaum, 11. -"It's
kind of like when you don't see
something a lot, and then you see it,
it's more special."
E-mails, phone calls and shared
photos keep the family in touch
between simchahs.
"It is very special to see the bonds
that these kids have," Jill
Greenbaum said.
"Every time we get together,"
added Fayga Greenbaum, "the kids
just pick up right where they left off.
They fall into the same cliques and
sit next to the same kids each time."
"They don't' even think about what
we do as being so unique," Michael
Greenbaum said. For us, making
sure we're together when we can be
-- no matter where we have to go —
is the natural thing to do." PI
