On The Road Again
"Have simchah, will travel" is the
Greenbaum family credo.
..r
SHELL! LIEBMAN DORFMAN
he Greenbaum family of
Southfield are 13-strong
and range in age from 5
to 72. And they spell
simchah: t-r-a-v-e-1.
For the last 25-years, Fayga and
David Greenbaum's family has been
piling into cars and planes to go
wherever their extended-family invi-
tations direct them.
But in the last five years the guest
lists have changed somewhat.
Meeting at Greenbaum simchahs,
Fayga's family and David's family
eventually melded into one group.
David's late brother's wife, children
and grandchildren began to invite
Fayga's relatives to their functions
and Fayga's sister's family started to
include David's.
With both sides attending the
same functions, it's often complicat-
ed to keep track of who's related to
whom.
"Sometimes I go up to someone at
a party, and say, 'Hi, I think you're
my cousin,'" Fayga Greenbaum said.
"But whether it turns out I am or
I'm not, it really doesn't matter. We

all consider each other related. The
kids just refer to the group as 'the
cousins.'"
While the Greenbaums' sons,
Michael and Joseph, and their fami-
lies live in Southfield, the rest of the
relatives - including Fayga and
David's daughter, former Detroiter
Dena Lieblich, and her family -
live in the New York/New Jersey
area. So it's the Detroiters who do
most of the traveling to the two or
three-family simchahs each year.
It's not always easy to travel with
young children or to coincide sched-
ules with college-age cousins, but
rarely does anyone miss a chance at
getting together.
The Trials Of Travel
"Travel plans vary," said Jill
Greenbaum who, with her husband
Joseph, eagerly anticipate simchah-
trips taken with their children,
Naomi, 11, Elana, 8, and Avi, 5.
Sometimes the family travels on
their own and other times as part of
