The former NHL player has settled in Charlotte, N.C., where he played his last full sea- son of North American hockey in 1997- 98, with the Charlotte Checkers of the East Coast Hockey League. Hartman played European hockey in Cologne in 1997-98, but later returned to Charlotte. In the past few years, he's occasionally re-joined the Checkers when they needed help at forward. Hartman played in 16 games in 2000- 01 and four in 2002-03. This year, he's appeared in 25 games and scored four goals and three assists. Hartman played 397 NHL games from 1986 through 1995, with Buffalo, Winnipeg, Tampa Bay and the New York Rangers, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1994. He scored 163 goals among his 309 points but was mainly known as a tough, physical play- er who amassed 2,818 penalty minutes. The Wayne State University women's hockey team posted the first winning sea- son in its five-year history, finishing the regular season 15-14-4. Senior forward Kim Spaulding, a Farmington Harrison graduate, was third in team scoring with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points Spaulding in 33 games. The 5-foot-3 Spaulding, an assistant captain, hasn't missed a game during her four-year career. She had six goals and seven assists as a freshman, eight assists in her sophomore year and five goals among 10 points last season. Naomi Kupferstein, a sophomore forward from Thornhill, Ontario, has one goal and two assists this year after netting three goals in 19 games last season. Both Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook- Kingswood hockey teams enjoyed strong state tournament runs. On the girl's side, netminder Hilary Schreiber made 21 saves as Cranbrook blanked Port Huron 5-0 in the state quarterfinal. In the semis, Sabrina Musts had two goals and two assists and AJ Roberts a goal and an assist in a 10-2 thrashing of Novi. But the girls lost the championship game to Grosse Pointe South, 3-1. Elliot Vilders' second-period goal helped the Cranbrook boys team win its Division 3 regional, 3-1 over Orchard Lake St.. Mary's. Vilders scored a goal in Cranbrook's 5-3 semifinal win over Dearborn Divine Child, and had an assist, along with Matt Robins, in the Cranes' 5-2 state championship victory over Gaylord. March Madness began with a bang for Birmingham Seaholm junior Jake Billmeyer. In Seaholrn's Class A district opener last week, against city rival A Groves, Billmeyer Kupferstein sank a three- point shot from the corner in the final seconds of regula- tion to force overtime. The Maples even- tually prevailed, 69-65, in double-over- time. Billmeyer finished with 16 points. Seaholm upset West Bloomfield in the district semifinal, with Billmeyer scoring 16. But North Farmington beat Seaholm in the district final, 65-44. Billmeyer had seven for Seaholm and Greg Shummer scored three for North Farmington. The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit won its first-round Class D dis- trict basketball game, 63-26 over Warren Immaculate Conception. The Jaguars then gave the state's ninth- ranked Class D team, Zoe Christian, a good battle before losing a 47-38 dis- trict semifinal. Bradley Garden and Levi Stewart led JAMD with 13 points apiece against 19-1 Zoe Christian. The Jaguars finished 7-15. Scott Thompson led Birmingham Groves to the Division 2 state swim championship on Saturday with state- best times in the 200 individual medley (1:52.00) and the 500 free (4:33.95 in the prelims, 4:35.47 in the finals). The Birmingham senior also swam on Groves' second place 200 medley relay and eighth place 400 free relay. Freshman Roman Sandler swam on Groves' 200 medley and 400 free relays, finished fifth in the individual medley (1:59.93) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.72). Franklin native Eliot Weiner is start- ing his junior season as an attackman for the Colorado College lacrosse team. Weiner, the team captain, was fourth in scoring with 11 goals and two assists for 13 points in the team's nine games last season. The Division III school begins its regular season this month. The young West Bloomfield wrestling team exceeded expectations this season, due in part to senior Evan Schwartz. Wrestling in the 112-pound class, the second-year varsity performer had the Lakers' second-best record, 29-9, enter- ing the individual district tournament. A Schwartz victory helped West Bloomfield win its team district and reach the regional finals. Individually, Schwartz won the Waterford Mott and Milford tournaments. Other West Bloomfield wrestlers included 152-pound junior Alex Braun, who spent most of the season on junior varsity but also saw some var- sity action.
