"Saying Kaddish is really about being
with the community," said Susie
Graham of West Bloomfield, who con-
tributed a chapter to the book about the
experience of saying Kaddish for her
daughter.
"It's getting up in the morning when
everything tells you to stay in bed and
pull the covers over your head," she
said. "Getting up for the commitment
you've made and being with people
basically in the same boat — with dif-
ferent losses — but all going through
the same kinds of things you are.
The book's narratives highlight Rabbi
Yoskowitz's words: "Shared stories can
heal. When we are able to share our sto-
ries of what took place during saying
Kaddish for a loved one, people who
have never been there before can find
out where they are likely to go during
the course of their mourning.
"When we say, We go through the
valley of the shadow of death,' we some-
times think we may never get out, but
the experiences of others who have been
there reinforce us."

For Gordon, a teacher with a husband
and four children, driving miles to the
synagogue in the direction opposite her
school wasn't easy.
"I sometimes came rushing in after
the service had started," she said.
"There were times when Rabbi
Yoskowitz saw me coming and handed
me his book, already open to the page
of the Kaddish."
But she said, "I was going because in
my heart, I was honoring my mom who
said Kaddish for a year when her moth-
er passed away. Being there gave me
comfort ancrwas a peaceful way to start
the day."
In the book, Gordon stressed the
unforgettable support of her fellow con-
gregants, writing that she was shocked
by the volume of the voices reciting the
responsive lines of the prayer.
"It sounded thunderous," she wrote.
"I looked around and realized what a
wonderful support group this was. 1 felt
shored up by their presence. I will be
there to help the next person and the
next because I know how it feels to be
comforted by the Kaddish minyan." El
