to speak out and to act. On April 18,
nearly 600 Detroiters will go to Israel as
participants of Federation's Michigan
Miracle Mission 4. In steadfast support,
they will shop in Israeli stores. They will
sample Israeli products. And with more
purpose than ever, they will bring home
the message to stock more Israeli prod-
ucts on the shelves of Hiller's Markets.

Irwin Shaw: An Appreciation

If, as the cliche has it, every person is a
book, then the late Irwin Shaw was an
entire shelf of volumes ("He Enriched
The Community," Feb. 20, page 89).
We first met in September 1965,
when I became the first emissary from
Israel at the Jewish Community Center
of Metropolitan Detroit. Since then, my
life and career have been intertwined
with his and I have been the major ben-
eficiary. I came to regard him as the
most genuine educator it was my privi-
lege ever to meet, a true and loyal col-
laborator and an infinite source of
knowledge and inspiration.
In January 2002, at the age of 82, I
was persuaded by Irwin's sons to come
from Israel to snow-covered Detroit as
their "surprise birthday gift" to Irwin on
the occasion of his 90th. Though faced
with the dilemma of a difficult journey,
the beguiling idea of seeing a beloved
friend again, one who had so radically
changed the course of my life and that
of my family, overrode the daunting
prospect and we spent an unforgettable
week together.
He was still involved with the JCC's
Institute for Retired Professionals,
which he had created; he still had some
new proposals for his revolutionary con-
cept of a changed Hebrew orthography;
he was still animated about the new edi-
tions of my own books; he still dis-
played a_ profound insight into Israel's
political situation; and he still showed a
deep concern for my personal welfare
and future.
In this short space, it is impossible to
do justice to the memory of one such as
Irwin Shaw, whose ambition in life was
to serve the Detroit Jewish community,
the Jewish people and Israel, which he
did so well, yet with the humility
becoming a truly great man.
