n the wake of Mel Gibson's sen-
sationalistic movie 'The Passion of
the Christ, three rabbis have
joined seven Christian ministers
in signing an interfaith statement urg-
ing Christian leaders to promote the
poitive teachings relating to the suffer-
ing of Jesus of Nazareth.
It urges Jewish and Christian leaders
to engage in dialogue about the shared
roots, common religious values. and
linked historical narratives of
and Judaism. ,
Signers of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit state-
ment include Temple Israel Rabbi Paul
Yedwab, the Michigan Board of Rabbis
president, and Adat Shalom Synagogue
Rabbi Daniel Nevins and Congregation
Shaarey Zedek Rabbi IrWin Groner,
.both past presidents.
The statement acknowledges the
Passion being a central tenet of
Christianity and its dramatization hav-
ing the potential to bring Christians
closer to their faith. It goes on to state,
"the depiction of the Jewish role in the
death of Jesus has been a source of con-
troversy for hundreds of years and is of
great concern to the Jewish community.
"Specifically, the portrayal of the
Jewish people collectively as killers of
Jesus has historically fomented hatred
and violence toward Jews," it adds.
The Vatican officially rejected the
claim of deicide and collective Jewish
guilt for the death .of Jesus in 1965. But
today, "when anti-Semitism is on the
rise worldwide, these teachings take on
new urgency," the statement stresses.
It ends with a call to the civilized
world to model the behaviors of justice,
honesty and compassion that drive
Christian-Jewish relations, especially in
metro Detroit.
