The Fourteenth Annual David W. Belin Lecture in
American Jewish Affairs

exp. g

In decade and a half which spanned the end of World War II until the
capture, trial, and execution of Adolph Eichman, American Jews found
numerous ways to think about and remember the event which came to be
universally known as "the Holocaust." In the postwar period, contrary to .
later assertions, through synagogues, Jewish community centers, communal
organizations, schools, and variety of other institutions, they experimented
with a variety of texts, practices, and performances which reminded them
of what had happened during "Hider times," "the catastrophe," and the
"tragedy of the concentration camps," —all phrases they employed.
