Becker questioned whether drawing
cartoons about having a large growth
removed from her brain was in good
taste. This guilt was compounded by
the fact that Pat, her neighbor across
the hall at the Bunting Institute, had
lost a sister to brain cancer.
In her book, she remembers telling
Pat it was "weird how our offices
ended up next door to each other."
"Makes it hard to forget how lucky
I am," she told the other woman,
who'd taken a sabbatical from her job
as a dean at Barnard College to
accept the fellowship. "I wonder all
the time if I would've been able to
write this book, if I would've
thought any of it was funny, if things
had turned out differently."
Pat's answer: "Of course you would
have. Maybe not the book, but you're
the same person — if you use humor
to deal with things, that's how you'd
deal with them."
After hearing her read an excerpt
from her book, Becker's mother react-
ed with relief. "I'm going to tell my
friend Rosemary she can stop pray-
ing," she said. 0
