I
've recently come to some conclusions about redecorating. After years of
living with the same old furniture in several different settings, I moved to
a small condominium, had a garage sale, got rid of most of the well-worn
stuff and started a search for a new look.
I discovered that my tastes have changed dramatically in the last couple of
decades. Gone are the wingback chair, the pink-and-white skirted sofa, the
clutter of knickknacks. My more classic contemporary look today is black and
white and spare with not-so-subtle shots of color — an orange glass lamp, dill
pickle green paint in the kitchen, a raspberry powder room. My daughter-in-
law was shocked when she first saw the "new look."
"This isn't your taste," she said. "I didn't think people's tastes changed
like that."
Well, of course they do. We suddenly like the simplicity of a black lac-
quered console as opposed to a painted and stenciled bench. And those quilt-
ed wall hangings might have given way to black-and-white photography. We
change, we evolve, our lifestyles dictate different kinds of home interiors.
Just ask Ellen Blau. We feature her house on the cover and inside this
issue. She and her husband took a very contemporary home and transformed
it into a "Harbor Springs, comfy denim couch" kind of space. Her new furni-
ture combines traditional pieces with antiques, and her kitchen is wallpa-
pered in an authentic Arts and Crafts botanical pattern.
Who says we have to stick to one style all our lives? How boring. So what
do you think — should I buy the turquoise Lucite chair or is that pushing it a
little?
Happy spring hunting and gathering.
