cessful, even after 9-11" insists
Sheik Palazzi, noting that the
Americans, British and French gov-
ernments have recognized represen-
tatives of the small extremist
Moslem Brotherhood sect as the
legitimate leaders of their Muslim
communities.
"Even in the U.S., the Muslim
organizations are controlled by the
most extreme people," he said.
Sheik Palazzi provided a Muslim
justification for his support of
Zionism, claiming the Koran proph-
esizes a Jewish return to the land of
Israel, but emphasized his political
arguments to his audience.
"Why destroy a dictatorship in
Iraq and create a terrorist regime
under Yasser Arafat? What is the
result of this contradiction?" Sheik
Palazzi asked. "The creation of a
Palestinian state is a suicide policy.
Whether it is proposed by Shimon
Peres or Ariel Sharon, it is the same
suicide ... The PLO was never creat-
ed to administer a state; the PLO
was created to increase terror."
While calling the American-
backed road map a mistake support-
ing terrorism, he welcomed
American actions in Iraq and hopes
the U.S. will act to "spread democ-
racy in the Arab world."
"It was always felt it was better to
have bad allies than no allies at all,"
Sheik Palazzi said. "It's a new idea
that we don't need dictators as
allies."
And just as Sheik Palazzi feels
defeating terrorism means regime
change in Saudi Arabia and opposi-
tion to a Palestinian state, he
believes the road to democracy leads
through Iran.
"In the present situation, the risk
is the new Iraq can be controlled by
the Iranian regime," said Sheik
Palazzi.
He urged the U.S. to promote a
change in Iran before there are elec-
tions in Iraq.
John Rofel, president of the B'nai
B'rith Great Lakes Region, said he
was pleased to present such an
unusual speaker to the community.
"This is a great start," he said.
"We want to bring organizations
together to work collaboratively," he
said, noting the co-sponsorships of
the Anti-Defamation League-
Michigan Region, Aish Detroit,
Hillel of Metro Detroit, the
National Christian Leadership
Conference for Israel and the
Zionist Organization of America.
