blinds. To look at them you'd swear
they're real wood shutters. Buy you
- can open and close the slats, or raise

Best of all, they're EverWood°,

Summer
Fare

Camp fair presents
options for the right
camping experience.

C

amp fair melts the frost of
winter with thoughts of sum-
mer's warmth.
The 15th annual Super
Summer for Kids: A Camp and
Activities Fair, taking place Sunday, Feb.
29, will include several new choices for
summer camp and programs.
"Some of these programs are right in
our back yards and we never knew
much about them — or they are brand
new," says Bloomfield Township's
Elaine Sturman, the fair organizer.
"Some are overnight experiences and
some are day programs. But you can be
sure that all will open new doors for
our children that are exciting and edu-
cational."
Jewish camps that will appear include
the JCC Day Camps, Tamarack Camps
and Camp Young Judaea.
The lineup of 85 American and
Canadian camps will be for children,
teens and young adults ages 2-20. The
American Camping Association or the
state of Michigan license all the camps
represented.
The JCC will cater to preschoolers
through eighth-graders with 40 camp
choices. The 250-acre outdoor campus
includes swimming pools, a low-ropes
course, a pond and sand volleyball
courts. New this year will be girls bas-
ketball taught by pro Allison Geatches
and star soccer taught by pro Gronthik
Chatterjee. Also new will be robotics,
model car racing, advanced rocketry

What To Evaluate

Some things to consider when making
a decision about camp:
• The child's age and maturity
• The facility and medical care
offered
• How camp directors hire staff
• Staff-to-camper ratio
• Parental recommendations
• Types of meals
• Visiting policies
• The activities •

and a girls self-esteem camp.
Professional actor Greg Trzaskoma will
lead the theater camp.
The fair will accent science and tech-
nology. Local vendors will include the
New Detroit Science Center, ID Tech
Camps, Cranbrook Science Institute,
Emagination Computer Camp, Henry
Ford Museum's Discovery Camp and
Tech Trekker, Camp Invention, Living
Science and Detroit Zoological Park's
Safari Camp.
Specialty camps will spotlight sports,
guided travel, academic enrichment and
the arts as well as programs for kids
with special needs. Other camps will
have a community service component.
Families will be able to ask questions
of camp representatives. "There is
something for everyone," said Sturman,
the camp fair organizer for 15 years.
"There is a program for families at
every economic level. There are pro-
grams for educational enrichment and
camps where a social experience is
stressed."
There also are summer work oppor-
tunities for high school and college stu-
dents.
Everyone who attends the camp fair
will receive a booklet listing all partici-
pating camps as well as key questions to
ask camp officials.
Sturman suggests absorbing all the
fair has to offer, then going home and
thinking about options before making a
final decision.
As children grow, their camping
interests change, Sturman said.
"We've got lots of different kinds of
programs that you may be looking
for, Sturman said

The camp fair will be held 11
a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29,
at the Birmingham Schools'
Corporate Training and
Conference Center behind Groves
High School, 31301 Evergreen,
Beverly Hills. Admission is free.
