Local boy and local girl fall in love
after working with army in Israel.

hik Elizabeth "Lizzy" Cohen of
Southfield grew up within miles of her
finance, Ben Doppelt of Livonia, they
illir never met until they were halfway
around the world, in Israel.
Both worked at an Israeli army base last year through
Volunteers for Israel.
"We did a lot of the grunt work so Israeli soldiers
could do more important things," said Cohen, 24,
who is program coordinator of Shalom Street, the new
children's cultural museum at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield. "And I felt like I came
alive in Israel. It was the best place for me, a special
spiritual place."
Doppelt, 26, a registered nurse, said Cohen was part

of a group that cleaned
and organized a new ware-
house. His group checked

get to Israel — or meet his
