Gaza Pullback After Elections

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel probably won't
remove any Gaza settlements before the
U.S. elections this November. Sources in
Jerusalem revealed the time frame
Wednesday ahead of a visit to Israel by
three high-ranking U.S. diplomats to
discuss Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon's plan to withdraw from Gaza.
The sources said the Bush administra-
tion is wary of risking Jewish votes over
Israeli unilateralism. Washington has
voiced misgivings over the routing of
Israel's security barrier in the West Bank.
Sharon and his national security adviser,
Giora Eiland, are expected to propose
substantial changes to the fence's route
during the U.S. envoys' two-day visit.

France, ADL Make Up

New York/JTA — France is taking "sig-
nificant measures" to protect its Jews,
according to the Anti-Defamation
League.
The ADL commended French
President Jacques Chirac in a letter on
Tuesday for his government's "efforts
to protect France's Jewish community
and its actions to combat the increased
anti-Semitism that has spread in France
in the past few years."
The letter ends the recent heated
exchange between ADL and Chirac
about ADL allegations that France was
not doing enough to stem a wave of
anti-Jewish attacks.
"We urge that these efforts be main-
tained to ensure that the Jewish com-
munity may be protected, and beyond
this, to intensify long-range programs
in schools and other key institutions
combating discrimination," the ADEs
letter to Chirac said.

Sharon Survives "No" Vote

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon survived no-con-
fidence votes in his government.
On Monday, the Israeli Knesset
voted 53-45 against the measures,
which were sparked by opposition to
Sharon's social and economic policies.

Jerusalem/JTA — Construction began
on a prayer site for mixed-gender serv-
ices at Jerusalem's Western Wall.
The construction next to Robinson's
Arch comes before an April deadline
set by Israel's High Court of Justice to
create such a space. The project, which
is expected to be completed before
then, has an estimated cost of
$400,000 to $500,000.

Red Cross Blasts Fence

Bern/JTA — The International
Committee for the Red Cross con-
demned Israel's West Bank security bar-
rier. The Swiss-based relief agency said
Wednesday that by building the fence
Israel has gone "far beyond what is per-
missible under international humani-
tarian law."
Israel's ambassador in Geneva,
Yaakov Levy, said the decision threatens
to hurt Israel's relations with the inter-
national relief organization. The Red
Cross' announcement came days before
a hearing scheduled on the fence at the
International Court of Justice at The
Hague.
