Mr. Shaye was, in every sense, a gadol (person of high stature), said Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of Shaarey Zedek, who officiated at his friend's Feb. 10 funeral along with Rabbi Irwin Groner, the synagogue's rabbi emeritus, and Cantor Chaim Najman. Rabbi Krakoff first met Mr. Shaye at morning minyan, which the devout Franklin resident attended daily. "He always had a smile, a firm hand- shake and a word of encouragement for me as I began my rabbinate," Rabbi Krakoff said. Along with his involvement in the business world, Mr. Shaye served as president of Jewish Family Service and on the boards of JVS and Shaarey Zedek. Mr. Shaye is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Eva Shaye of Beverly Hills, Calif.; daughter, Linda Shaye of California; grandchildren, Katja and Kollin Min, Juno Shaye, Lee Shaye Landey; great-grandson, William Min; and companion, Barbara Penrose. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Shaye and the dear broth- er of the late Sol C. Shaye, the late Nathan Shaye and the late Pauline Rappoport. Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. W hen the board of the Jewish Community Center was offered a large tract of land among the farms in West Bloomfield, JCC director Irwin Shaw envisioned a campus with space for young and old, swimming pools and running tracks, schools and theaters. After a quarter cen- tury at the helm of the JCC, Mr. Shaw retired in 1976, one year after the corner- stone was set for the Eugene and Irwin Shaw Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus. On Feb. 10, 2004, Mr. Shaw, 92, died of cancer at his West Bloomfield home. Among Mr. Shaw's proudest accom- plishments at the JCC was the founding of the annual Jewish Book Fair in 1951. Now the oldest and the largest in the country, the book fair has hosted the most famous and accomplished writers in the world. He was also devoted to encouraging .
