GREAT ITALIAN
FOOD AND SERVICE

Larco's restaurants
Family owned for over 50 years

became happier, got some
perspective.

JN: Much of your advice
can be culled from your
experience: accept rejec-
tion as natural and
keep plugging away,
don't give up on find-
ing the right guy,
look at yourself.
Do you have any
other advice for
women strug-
gling to define
themselves?
SS: Therapy
changed my
life. Though it's
more a New York habit
than [a] Michigan [one], I
highly recommend it.
To students, friends and protégés, I
also recommend going for your
dreams, [and] doing serious soul
searching to figure out exactly what
you adore doing in life. Never expect
other people to make you happy, be as
honest as possible, keep a journal, fight
for what you need and believe in, take
classes to keep learning, read what you
want to be writing, hang out with peo-
ple who understand and believe in you,
get rid of negative people who don't
listen or offer encouragement.

JN: You write
with
great
poignancy
— and
humor —
about your
family, espe-
cially issues
concerning your
mother and
father. Did you
tell them what you
were saying about
them before you sent
the manuscript out,
hoping to have their
blessing?
SS: A friend just finished
my book and said, "In
every memoir I've ever read,
the family is dysfunctional,
incestuous, abusive, stuck in poverty.
In yours, every single family member
is charming, kind and supportive —
but everyone else is nuts."
. No, I don't ask anyone permission for
what I write. My parents haven't read the
book. My mom promised she wouldn't
read it until after the book party.

Salgo, who is Jewish, is not
aware of information suggest-
ing that Jewish people are
genetically predisposed to
heart disease more than any
other groups. Both his dad,

anybody who went to a doctor
