Forty couples learn the art of making sushi.

T

he Japanese perfected it and
more than 40 Jewish couples
tried their hand at the art of
making sushi at Specialties
Showroom in Berkley on Jan. 31.
The kitchen and appliance store was
transformed into a giant cooking class
for the "Sushi and Sake" event, hosted
by the couples committee of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Young Adult Division. "So many people
enjoy sushi and want to know how to
make it, we thought this would be the
perfect couples activity," said Jen
Friedman, the committee's co-chair.
Among those mixing and mingling
were: Lee. and Robin Trepeck, Steve and
Helene Greenwald, Matt and Sarah
Roth, and newly engaged couple
Martin Belkin and Stacey Levine. Avy

Schreiber brought along his key-
board and treated the crowd to live
music.
Chef Justin Kopsch of Noble Fish
in Clawson demonstrated how to
roll the seaweed, rice, vegetables and
fish, using a bamboo mat. Then the
couples rolled up their sleeves, mak-
ing their own creations at various
stations around the room.
Some, like Aimee Simtob, found
out it's not as easy as it looks. "The
key is not to overstuff the roll or it all
falls apart," she said. Kim Bernzweig
seemed to have an easier time: "This
is like arts and crafts to me." ❑
