CHERKASKY & PAVEY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL JONAS

T

he Jewish Community Center (JCC) in West Bloomfield became the ultimate meeting
place for Erin Cherkasky, 28, and Glenn Pavey, 32. The couple met at a JCC board meet-
ing and were married about a year later. "He was assigned to be my mentor, so we met for
a drink," recalled Erin. "He was from out of town (Rockford, Illinois), and I introduced
him to my friends." Erin, a first-grade teacher at West Maple Elementary School in Birmingham, and
Glenn, a developer with the Farbman Group in Southfield, continued to see each other at board meet-
ings and, as Erin says, "we just started hanging out."
They announced their engagement at Thanksgiving
and wanted a Saturday evening wedding the following
summer.
The date May 17, 2003, was available at Temple Israel,
which meant the wedding would take place five months
later. For most people planning a wedding, a few months
would be a difficult task but not for Erin's mother, Janice
Cherkasky. She owns Gourmet Parties, Inc. in Franklin,
specializing in event planning and consulting.
"I feel fortunate that I have a mother who is a party planner because she did most of the decision making," said
Erin. "She is probably the only person that could plan a good party so well and so quickly."
Mother and daughter together chose the color scheme of pinks and purples and strived for a garden-like setting.
"I used all of my resources, and many of the people I work with on a daily basis," said Janice. But the week before
the wedding, the mother-of-the bride let the other experts take charge. "I separated from the party, because I
wanted to be a guest," she noted.
The bride wanted the room to be a surprise and did not enter Herman Hall at Temple Israel until she was Mrs.
Pavey. "I was shocked. It was lacey, dreamy and magical."
The best part, according to the bride, was that the wedding was "stress free." Erin then added, "And that's just
not normal for a bride."
