SHARON LUCKERMAN $1500 due at signing. 2004 SAAB 9-5 ARC SEDAN Countdown To Israel now and ice didn't prevent about 90 Detroiters bound for Federation's Michigan Miracle Mission 4 from attending an update meeting Jan. 26 at the Max M. Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Township. There, they heard about everything from Hebrew and Israel history classes provided for the travelers, to what to pack and highlights of their agenda. Nearly 600 Detroiters are planning to visit Israel April 18-28 on this people- to-people mission. "This mission is another occasion for the Detroit Jewish community to put itself on the map, and it's something we can be proud of," said Peter Alter, mission co-chair with Dr. Richard Krugel, both of Bloomfield Hills. "It's also an opportunity to create a greater sense of community among Detroit Jewry. Sharing this trip will create a special bond for many years to come." Those bonds also extend to Israelis they will meet and share time with during their trip — especially those Israelis in Detroit's Partnership 2000 region. Thanks to Partnership 2000, estab- lished to connect Jews in the United States with those in Israel, Detroit has developed a strong connection to its sister area in the Central Galilee, which includes Nazareth Illit, Migdal Ha F,mek and the rich agricultural area of the Jezreel Valley. This area was handpicked by Robert Aronson, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, said Mark Milgrom of Birmingham, a longtime lay leader in the Partnership 2000 program. It has the equivalent Jewish population of Detroit, and the program has fostered cultural and pro- fessional exchanges between the two - areas, he said. In the region, Detroit travelers will spend time visiting with Israeli families and can visit a school, technical center or hospital. Detroiters also will cele- brate Israel's Independence Day, Yom HaAtzmaut, at barbecues in the homes of Israelis in the region. The excitement in the room grew as Alter began to discuss the agenda for the trip. With 15 busloads of Detroiters slated, mission leaders devel- oped 15 itineraries. The wide-ranging choices of stops included Masada and the Dead Sea, an archaeological dig, a high-tech facility, museums, the securi- ty fence and the Golan Heights. During several mega-events, all Detroiters will gather in places like Hebrew University on Mt. Scopus and at the Kotel for Shabbat candlelight- ing. On the last evening at the Tel Aviv Hilton, the planners promise a gala event with a major Israeli speaker. For information on joining the trip, call Sally Krugel at (248) 203-1485. The Jewish News and the Michigan Board of Rabbis are mission cospon- sors.
