He was a contemporary painter and illustrator of children's books. Mr. Silverstein began his career in commercial illustration at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit. After two years of army service, he settled in London and did freelance work. When he finally began to concen- trate on fine art, he had his works displayed at the Detroit Institute of Arts, among other venues. HARRIET TRAURIG, 55, former Detroiter of San Francisco, died Jan. 17, 2004. She studied at State University of New York at Binghamton and received a master's degree in arts administration. She went to St. Louis to be execu- tive director of what is now known as the Contemporary Art Museum. Leaving in 1989, she worked in vari- ous arts and consulting administrative programs in St. Louis and elsewhere. In the early 1990s, she ran the public art component of MetroLink, the region's light rail system. Since 1999, she was the director of the city of San Jose Public Art Program. Mrs. Traurig is survived by her hus- band, Rupert Jenkins of San Francisco; mother, Ethel Traurig of Detroit; brothers and sister-in-law, Joel and Linda Traurig of San Francisco, Marc Traurig of Detroit; sister, Carol Trefry of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; stepsons, Benjamin Brainard of Seattle, Ralph Bryan Brainard of Chicago, Aaron Brainard of Detroit; stepdaughter, Claire Siderman of Traverse City. Contributions may be made to the Special Olympics. RUTH ZATKIN, 88, of Southfield, died Jan. 29, 2004. She was a charter member of Temple Israel, a member of ORT and the American Jewish Congress. Mrs. Zatkin taught English to Russian speaking immigrants and she was also a docent at the DIA. Mrs. Zatkin is sur- vived by her children, David and Gloria Zatkin of Southfield, Richard Zatkin of Zatkin Southfield, Donna Zatkin of Southfield, Lawrence Zatkin of White Lake; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchil- dren. She eras the beloved wife of the late Edward I. Zatkin; mother-in-law of the late Judith Zatkin; sister of the late Daniel Symez.
