A Small Miracle,
A Great Response

A Small Miracle, the charity established
in 2000 to provide Chanukah gifts to
low-income families with children in
the Detroit area, distributed 300 gifts to
children last month. Children received
board games, dolls, computer games,
craft kits, bicycles and gift certificates.
The independent charity receives its
funding to purchase gifts from individu-
als and a local family foundation. A
Small Miracle welcomes donations to
help fund this effort. The charity also
appreciates donated new toys that can
be distributed to qualifying families.
Donations are tax deductible; call (248)

Southfield-based Jewish Family Service
and Healthy Start/Healthy Families
Oakland are offering services specially
designed for the Orthodox community.
This voluntary program provides par-
ticipants with confidential and free serv-
ices personalized for each family's situa-
tion. Healthy Start participants are visit-
ed at their home by an observant, mas-
ter's level social worker who -assists with
coordination of health services and aids
in referrals to other community
resources.
The program offers families a caring
and supportive outlet to ask questions
about the emotional, physical and cog-
nitive development of a child. Moms
and dads are able to learn new parent-
ing techniques, while gaining insight
about their children and themselves
with the aid of the worker.
Participation in the Healthy Start pro-
gram promotes and enhances Jewish
values, such as shalom bayit (peaceful
home), derech eretz (proper decorum)
and rachamim (compassion), corner-
stones in a Jewish home. Current fami-
lies report a higher degree of school
readiness in their children.
Program participants can begin to
receive home visits prenatally or up
until the child is 4 months old. The
family support specialist also helps fami-
lies access community resources, such as
child care, employment opportunities,
financial or housing assistance and
much more.
