Bass

square-foot building
near Telegraph and
11 Mile roads in
Southfield, calls itself
"a holistic substance
abuse treatment cen-
ter that offers alter-
natives to comple-
ment traditional sub-
stance abuse treat-

ment.''
The Clean House staff includes two
psychotherapists. Along with individual
and group therapy, free support groups
of all types take place every night of the
week. While some meetings use the 12-
step approach, others are non-tradition-
al groups — one for addicts and a sepa-
rate one for their families, says Sandra
Schiff, executive director.
But most unusual is the program of
activities, including computers, art,
music, yoga and fitness training. Marky
Bass, a musician, leads a drumming
workshop; Hochberg, Clean House's
CEO and a former teacher in the
Detroit Public Schools, teaches ceram-
ics.
Patients are encouraged to hang
out at the center any time during
the day. "I never turn away anyone
for any reason," Marky Bass says.
Bass says he knows many addicts
in the Jewish community "and no
one wants to talk about it."
Remaining drug-free is not an
easy battle, he says — "I fight it
every day." ❑

now," he says.
Then, a patient in the clinic
where he was working told her har-
rowing life story and introduced
him to Alcoholics Anonymous.
"I realized the 12 steps have
nothing to do with alcoholism," he
says. "They're all about character
development. Anyone can benefit
from what they teach.
"Here I am, 43 years later, still
going to AA."
In addition to advancing under-
standing and treatment of Jewish
alcoholics and drug addicts, Rabbi
Twerski has researched and written
about spousal abuse in the Jewish
community. He is also the author
of several books on Judaism and
spirituality.
