Exploring Activism Via A Jewish Lens Six students from Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield traveled to Washington, D.C., to take part in Panim el Panim, a four-day high school pro- gram about Jewish learning, values and social responsibility. The six are: Binyomin Berlin of Oak Park, Rachel Schulman of Ann Arbor, Rebecca Halpern of Southfield, Yissachar Jerusalem of Oak Park, Daniel Spitzer of West Bloomfield and Ariella Wrotslaysky of Southfield. All are juniors except Wrotslaysky, who is a sophomore. During the November program, the group interacted with public policy makers and lobbied their elected officials. They discussed cur- rent issues with leaders of the Anti- Defamatioii League, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the Israel Policy Forum and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. They distributed clothing to homeless people. They also met people who affect- ed their views on life. "Panim el Panim taught me to be more aware of what is going on in politics," Halpern said. "I also learned about homelessness, which is something I had not thought about before."
