"R
ost golfers go through
their entire golfing lives
without getting a hole in
one, and many would give anything
to experience the thrill. But for
Robert Feldman of West Bloomfield
and Boynton Beach, Fla., it's a pret-
ty easy achievement. He has 36 of
them — all documented by witness-
es.
Feldman, 77, who's been golfing .
for 56 years, got his
latest ace Nov. 3 in
Delray Beach, Fla.,
while practicing for an
upcoming golf outing
that he considers just
as important as any of
his holes in one.
He has checked the
Guinness Book of World
"Records to see if he
should be listed. But
the book only describes
the youngest and oldest Feldman
golfers to hit holes in
one and doesn't men-
tion totals.
Feldman, who also has racked up
four double eagles, recalls his longest
ace, on the 365-yard, par four, No.
11 hole at Shenandoah Golf Club in
West Bloomfield. "The previous
foursome was on the green putting
when my ball bounced up into the
hole," he said.
Feldman competed in the U.S.
Amateur tournament in 1959 and
made it to the semifinals. He now
plays golf three times a week and
maintains a six handicap.
He's in the process of rounding up
144 golfers — men and women,
most from the Detroit Jewish com-
munity — to play in the first Jeffrey
David Feldman Memorial Open
Feb. 19 at Villa Del Rey Golf Club
in Delray Beach. It's in memory of
his son who lived in Farmington
Hills and died at age 52 in
December 2002 of liver disease.
Proceeds will go to the Michigan
and Florida branches of the
American Liver Foundation.
"About 20 of us Michiganders got
together for a golf outing in Florida
last winter, and we decided to turn
it into a formal event to benefit the
Liver Foundation," said Feldman.
"We'll have breakfast and lunch, a
shotgun start and plenty of prizes —
all for $100 per person.
"Almost 100 percent of the golfers
will be Michigan residents who go
to Florida for the winter or who
now live down here permanently."
Feldman's other son, Keith, died
of a heart ailment at
37 in 1993. His wife,
Jeannette, died last
year. Feldman's fami-
ly started the Feldbro
Meat Market busi-
ness in the Detroit
area, and he worked
there before going
into the wholesale
meat business. He is
now retired.
Feldman was a pro-
fessional boxer as a
youngster, fighting
33 matches as
"Bobby Fields." One of his oppo-
nents was former middleweight
champion Tony Zale, who beat him
in a decision.
Among the golfers registered so far
are: Herb Rechter of Bloomfield
Hills; Dr. Mickey Imber of
Southfield; Dave Moss, Wally
Ziegler and Ben Gorge of
Farmington Hills, and Dr. Paul
Schneider, Dr. Tom Kovan, Fred
Levey, Cal Levey, Leonard Baron,
Mickey Mindell, Newton Levin and
Jerry Glassman, all of West Bloom-
field. ❑
