Sharon Scandal
Deepens In Israel

Swedes Pull
Exhibit's Ads

Jerusalem/JTA — A businessman
friend of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon was charged with bribing the
prime minister before he took office.
According to the indictment served
at Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court on
Wednesday, David Appel paid
Sharon's son Gilad $100 million in
the late 1990s to help Appel's bid to
buy a Greek resort island and then
transferred $580,000 to the ranch
where both Sharons live.
The money allegedly was intended
to encourage Ariel Sharon, then the
foreign minister, to advance Appel's
deal.
Appel's lawyer denied the new
charges. The charge sheet also accuses
Appel of bribing Industry.and Trade
Minister Ehud Olmert, who at the
time was mayor of Jerusalem, to
advance the island deal. Both Sharon
and Olmert have denied any involve-
ment in the case.
Justice Ministry officials said the
charges against Appel do not imply
wrongdoing on the part of Sharon or
Olmert, and said a decision about
whether the two should face charges is
pending.

Stockholm/JTA — A Swedish muse-
urn is pulling posters for artwork fea-
turing a Palestinian suicide bomber.
But the museum is letting the art-
work itself, which depicts an Islamic
Jihad suicide bomber floating on the
blood of her Israeli victims, remain on
display.
Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Zvi
Mazel, knocked out the lamps around
the display. Before the incident, Israel
had been promised the exhibit would
not contain works referencing the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Powell Blames
Hezbollah.

Washington/JTA — Colin Powell said
Hezbollah was responsible for new
clashes along the Israel-Lebanon bor-
der.
"It's unfortunate that Hezbollah
once again has caused this need for a
response," the U.S. secretary of state
said in a news conference.
He spoke after Israeli jets bombed
Hezbollah targets in southern

Lebanon in response to the unpro-
voked killing of an Israeli soldier
along the Israel-Lebanon border.
"The deliberate action they took,
which resulted in the loss of life, once
again demonstrates the nature of that
organization."
Powell also warned Syria against
providing any support for Hezbollah,
either vocally or by allowing leaders of
the terrorist group to work out of
Damascus. Powell said both sides need
to monitor their actions carefully and
adhere to the established line between
Israel and Lebanon.

Boston Group
Backs Gay Marriage

New York/JTA — Boston's Jewish
Community Relations Council over-
whelmingly endorsed same-sex mar-
riage.
Last week's vote by the 42 Jewish
groups that make up the Boston
JCRC came as Massachusetts consid-
ers the issue.
Some groups are calling for a state
amendment that would bar same-sex
marriage after the state's Supreme
Court struck down a ban on such
marriages.
