Ask The Orthodontist Predicting the Future It is possible to estimate if your child will need braces in the future by certain aspects of their developing teeth. For example, when all the baby teeth (also known as decidu- ous or primary teeth) have erupted, if there is crowding or not excess space between the teeth, there is a likelihood that orthodontics will be needed. The permanent teeth take up more space than the baby ones they replace so even if the baby teeth look perfect in ideal alignment, there Nelson Hersh DDS, MS Licensed Specialist is probably going to be crowding. Engagements ROTOLE-SCHWARTZ To best guess if your child has enough room in the posterior or back of the mouth, you can measure from the front of the lower 1st molar, which erupts into the mouth around age 6, to the back of the lateral incisor which is the 2nd tooth from the midline. If the measurement is less than 22 millimeters, then you can guess there will not be enough room for the future permanent teeth. B arbara Schwartz, formerly of Southfield, and Marilyn and Vincent Rotole of Farmington Hills are pleased to announce the engagement of their children Dr. Karen Schwartz and Vincent Anthony Rotole. Karen is also the daughter of the late Sidney Schwartz. Karen received her bachelor of science degree at Michigan State University and her doctor of medicine degree at Wayne State University. She is in practice with MGA Obstetrics Gynecology in Troy and Warren. Vince received his bachelor of science degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids and is employed as an auto- motive manufacturer's representative To determine if the palate, or roof of the mouth, is wide enough, the measure- ment you want to see between the right and left 1st permanent molars is 38 millimeters, or the length of a dental cotton roll. This dimension is fairly con- sistent from age 10 to adolescence. Lastly, if your child can fit their little finger in between the upper and lower front teeth when the mouth is closed, then you may have a future problem with overlap. Also, if you do not see at least 50% of the lower teeth when the teeth are closed together, there may be a problem with a deep over-bite. All these are best evaluated by an orthodontist who can best determine growth direction and when to intervene.
