The Eternal Road begins as a play
about a Jewish community huddled
together in a synagogue during a
time of persecution. No particular
time or place is established. While
they quarrel (some are believers, oth-
ers not), a rabbi arrives and recites
some of the great triumphs and trials
faced by the Children of Israel to
give the people a perspective.
His tales includes stories of
Abraham, Moses, the prophets and
kings and is enacted in a spectacular
of singing and dancing.
"The play ends with the expulsion
of these Jews from the city and they
take up the eternal road of Judaism
as a positive march asserting their

belief in faith and continuity," Stern
says, adding that a new ending was
created for the 1999 production that
includes two important events not in
the original — the Holocaust and
the creation of Israel.
The remake of The Eternal Road
took two years and had an interna-
tional cast. After 10 performances,
the play traveled to Tel Aviv and
Brooklyn, N.Y.
"The whole city of Chemnitz got
into the spirit of the production,"
says Stern, who recalls the moving
Shabbat service the town hosted dur-
ing the run of performances. Since
the synagogue had been destroyed
during Kristallnacht, the town held
the service in a community hall. So
many people arrived, that the service
was moved to the town's largest hall.
After the production of The
Eternal Road, the people of
Chemnitz reconstructed its syna-
gogue. "A lovely synagogue," says
Stern, who returned for its opening
in 2001. I.1
