Old Woodward asposa.com CPLLTOOPi PAP SUBSCRIPTION 248.351.5174 1/16 2004 6 I did a double-take on opening the Jan. 9 issue of the Jewish News to page 3 that lists the Contents. The main heading was "Spirituality" and the photo showed two adults in New Year's Eve party hats blowing noisemakers, with the subtitle, "Upbeat Temple Party Ushers In Secular Year." I thought that perhaps the heading was a bad joke or a mistake. When I looked up and read the article (on page 49), it was indeed under your category of "Spirituality." The article and accom- panying pictures had nothing to do with the concept of spirituality. Not every social activity or party held in a synagogue has a spiritual compo- nent. Perhaps it would be more honest to eliminate (instead of cheapening) your Spirituality section, and consider different headings such as Synagogue, ;Temple or community activities. Bruce Sherizen Oak Park Arafat Is Not About To Change An article in your paper on Dec. 12 ("Arafat's Revolution," page 41) struck my attention. It is what I have been say- ing for the last 30 years, since I came to Canada. You are not dealing with a human being in Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat. He was raised by his uncle, the mufti of Jerusalem, the one who wanted to help Hitler kill all the Jews. Do you have any doubts what he learned in his childhood? I don't have any. It was our mistake to let him into the West Bank. We should have forced him to stay in Fiance or Algiers or Tunis. When you see a snake, you don't let him into your house; you try to kill him or push him away. It was refreshing to see your paper come out nice and strong. The article by special commentator Moshe Dan is unfortunately the bitter truth that the people of Israel have to live with. I do hope and pray that the world and our brothers around the world will wake up and see how important it is that we as Jews should support our homeland. Betzalel Folk Windsor Get Out Of Iraq Since no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq and Saddam Hussein has been captured, we should go home before another young man or woman can be killed. No American soldier should be deprived of the joys that life may offer them. These young men and women have loved ones and are entitled to have a chance to live out their lives. President Bush has painted himself into a corner and will not cut and run. Could it be the oil behind this trumped-up reason to invade Iraq? If not, our job is done. Iraq has oil and therefore the means to rebuild itself and also retain the free- dom it has been given. It is not the responsibility of the American taxpayer to rebuild Iraq nor is it the responsibili- ty of President Bush to hand out juicy non-bid contracts to his rich friends, Halliburton comes to mind. Wake up America, President Bush is either incompetent or willing to give up American lives for oil. Robert Leaf Farmington Hills Architect Is A Mentsh Thanks to Special Writer Bill Carroll for the wonderfully warm and enlightening article about Leonard Siegel CA Life In Architecture," Jan. 2, page 32). He has brought so much to the Detroit community. I had the pleasure of working with Leonard and Lonny Zimmerman when their firm built the Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel Center, including the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Parenting Center and the Beth Hayeled Nursery School, in West Bloomfield. Leonard took a dream and made it into an amazing reality. As was stated so often in the article, he was a pleasure to work with and never made me feel like I didn't know what I was talking about. The one word missing in the myriad of descriptives about Leonard was the word mentsh. He personifies all that that name implies — a man of ethical conscience along with a heart of gold. Congratulations Leonard Siegel. Our community is blessed to have him with us. Janet Pont mem bership director, Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield
