Piven has been making audiences
laugh in comedies, like Old School and
Rush Hour 2, and on TV in Ellen (as
Cousin Spence) and on the Larry
Sanders Show (as head writer Jerry
Ca..pen).
When he was part of the latter's cast
in 1992-93, "no one was watching —
there weren't very many subscribers to
HBO. It did absolutely nothing for
my career, but it's had a life after the
fact," he says, referring to reruns. 'And
it did a lot for me as a person."
As for dramatic vehicles, he cites
Runaway Jury as a highlight. "I've been
so lucky. I got to go toe to toe with
Dustin Hoffman, and he's my hero,
my idol. To work with a guy like that,
who ends up being a total mentsh, a
sweet, openhearted guy who is in his
60s and loves his wife and his family,
it proves to me that it can be done —
you can have a life and be an artist."
Piven, 38, a former member of the
Second City National Touring
Company, got his start on the stage at
the Piven Theatre Workshop, the
drama program founded by his par-
ents, Joyce and the late Byrne Piven,
in Evanston, after the family moved to
the Chicago area from Jeremy's New
York .City birthplace.
Among those who trained at the
Evanston-based theater/learning center
are actors Aidan Quinn, Lili Taylor and
Joan and John Cusack. Piven's sister,
