Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.
The Bharatiya Temple, constructed in
1981, serves the Hindu community. In
the Hindu tradition, Bharat is the sacred
land of peace and non-violence. One
who follows the traditions and precepts
of Krishna and Rama, thought to have
ruled Bharat, is known as a Bharatiya.
The first religion explored in the
Religious Diversity Journey series was
Judaism, with a visit to Temple Shir
Shalom and instruction by Rabbi
Dannel Schwartz. A month later, the
seventh-graders visited St. Thomas
Chaldean Church to learn about
Christianity, focusing mainly on
Chaldean culture and practice. On
March 11, 2004, the same group of stu-
dents will explore Islam through the
Islamic Association.of Greater Detroit in
Rochester Hills.
At a wrap-up session scheduled for
April 28, 2004, groups of five students
— made up of one each from the five
school districts represented — will pres-
ent a report on what they've learned.
Adelman stressed that the purpose of
the sessions is to give "information about
the religions, not teaching the religion."
"The groups of kids are really starting
to meld, to function as a team," he said.
"At least they're louder every time."
The Religious Diversity Institute faces
opposition from the Michigan affiliate
of the American Atheists, which feels
the program violates the establishment
clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Adelman, said the Institute, which
receives no taxpayer funds, carefully
follows the boundaries set by the U.S.
Supreme Court in the Lemon v.
Kurtzman decision. In this 1971 case,
the Court differentiated between
teaching or celebrating religion in pub-
licly funded institutions and teaching
about religion.
"We definitely come down on the
side of teaching about religion,"
Adelman said. ❑
