ETE yoUR C SOURC FOR: Ahava Products Apparel Artwork Bar/Bat Mitzvah Items Books Chatchkes e Keepsakes It is my understanding that the guide- lines for selecting participants in the Jewish Book Fair are the following: Either the author is of the Jewish faith, however tenuous his/her com- mitment, or the subject of the book is relevant to Jewish life. If this is correct, I fail to see how Madeleine Albright was selected as one of the speakers at the 2003 Book Fair. Ms. Albright's book is not of par- ticular interest to Jewish readers for its Jewish content, nor is she Jewish. Not only is she not Jewish, but she carefully cultivated ignorance of her Jewish origins when the information was offered to her. The Palestinians have always favored mendacity and betrayal as negotiation ploys. They are not suddenly hoping to deal squarely because Israelis are willing to make sacrifices. Oddly enough, the wooly-minded Mr. Beilin doesn't seem to notice that his new plan is a slightly enhanced version of the one he and the Israel government sponsored at Camp David in 2000 and Taba in 2001. That offering, for which Beilin, in an unauthorized gesture of magna- nimity, added a few more goodies, was turned down flat and, moreover, was the direct stimulus for the second intifada (Palestinian uprising). But Beilin remains blithely unaware of any connection between the radical proposals of Camp David-Taba and this latest round of violence. Instead, he goes along with the "blame Sharon" position that is so popular with the mass media and the anti- Semites of Europe. In fact, none other than Beilin was the chief engineer of the Oslo Accords, the disastrous initiative that brought in the disastrous Yasser Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Under the assumption that giving a terrorist legitimacy will make him act legitimately, Beilin and the Utopian Left, who are convinced that their superior morality gives them superior judgment, manipulated Israel's gen—.... uine and desperate desire for peace into an arrangement that would bring into Israel's backyard Arafat, a man who has left a trail of corruption, chaos and violence wherever he has placed a foot. Mr. Beilin can't, it seems, give up working on pie-in-the-sky peace plans. He's still insisting that nobility of pur- pose will inspire a like-minded quality in others, even individuals permanent- ly infatuated with their own self- destructive hatred. Firebombing Is Delporable Freedom of the press is one of the most important values instilled in all Americans across our nation. It is a value that often separates our country from other countries. Newspapers, like other mass media outlets, offer glimpses into the heart and souls of our fellow citizens. A community newspaper communicates, informs, challenges, educates, mourns and celebrates. This is why the recent attempt to firebomb the Arab . American News is an insult to all Americans. The firebombing was an attack upon what we hold most dear. The American Jewish Committee Metropolitan Detroit Chapter con- demns this attack and urges the Dearborn police and the FBI to aggressively investigate and work to bring those responsible to justice.
