BESSER Washington Correspondent D emocratic presidential fron- trunner Howard Dean, sud- denly operating in the politi- cal shadow cast by last week's capture of Saddam Hussein, gamely tried to reinforce his foreign policy credentials this week with a major speech in California. But that speech could just add to his problems with some pro-Israel Democrats. A leading Jewish activist said, "There is a huge stop-Dean movement among the Democrats — and the Jews are the first likely target." Last. weekend's cap- ture of Hussein corn- pounds Dean's Jewish problem. While the Jewish community as Dean a whole was divided on the issue of the war, this source said, the pro-Israel activist segment has been supportive — and Dean's anti-war stance has not been well received. Dean has also waded into the treacherous waters swirling around the controversial Geneva Accord, the shadow peace agreement worked out by Israeli and Palestinian peace activists but denounced by the gov- ernment in Jerusalem and major Jewish groups in the U.S. In his Los Angeles speech, Dean called it a "a very positive develop- ment. The reason the Geneva Accord is an attractive proposition is "pro- Israel groups, which have vigorously opposed the Geneva initiative. "Geneva is Oslo warmed over," said Morris Amitay, a longtime pro-Israel leader in Washington. "It didn't work, and we're a much wiser community; this shows a complete lack of sophis- tication by Dean." Also in L.A., Dean castigated the Bush administration for a "15-month holiday" from Mideast peacemaking, and reinforced his commitment to the "special relationship with the state of Israel." "Gov. Dean is onto something when he takes the president to task LIGHTNING ROD on page 28 248-354.6600 24625 W. 12 Mile • Southfield www.tamaroff.com A EACMOEH or THE TAMAROFF AUTOMOTIVE FAMILY Mon. & Thurs. 8:30 - 9:15 Tues., Wed., Fri 8:30 - 6:15 • Sat. 10-3 Based on approved credit.
