from page 73 Like the tide says, this is traditional, classic klezmer. Clarinet and fiddle lead the band in familiar tunes like "Odessa Bulgar" and "Russian Sher." Most rec- ognizable will be the medley of songs in "South Coast Hora," which include "Hava Nagila" and "Siman Tov U'Mazel Tov." Led by Renah and Keith Wolzinger, the eight-piece band is composed of solid musicians, keeping the feel family friendly and fun, rather than raucous like the Klezmatics. The album is completely instru- mental, mixing slower songs like "Der Gasn Nigun" with faster ones JEWISH MUSIC like "Freilach in Swing." The boun- cy oompa keeps the smooth clarinet- led beat moving. Atom and His Package Attention Blah Blah Blah (Hopeless Records) www atomandhispackage.com Philadelphia's Adam Guren returns with another album of fast, quirky elec- tric guitar-driven songs. Although often categorized as punk rock, the sing-songy feel of his music makes him closer to They Might Be Giants or Weird Al Yankovic. All the songs are written and per- formed by Guren alone, using guitars, sequencers and drum machines, which "I unfortunately years ago named my package," he says. Many tracks are goofy and sarcastic, but like on his previous CD What We Do On Christmas, Guren takes a polit- ical turn on Jewish issues. In The Palestinians Are Not the Same as the Rebel Alliance," he attacks anti-American and anti-Israel protes- tors: "You're so leftist/You're so pro- peace/You hate the death penalty/But l- ove it in the Middle East." 7 Just Like Bubbe Used To Make! This season Friedman has done her part to bring the warmth of the Chanukah holi- day to us with her recently released Chanukah CD, Light These Lights (Sounds Write Productions). Friedman's CD offers musical arrangements that bring fresh- ness to tradition- al, classic Chanukah songs. Light These Lights also features four original composi- tions written by this popular singer of Jewish music who has recorded 19 other albums. Among the CD's tracks is the light-hearted "Dreidel Song" — a tune that brings to mind the voice of Joan Baez to whom Friedman has often been compared. What sets Light These Lights apart is its inclusion of various types of musical forms reflecting a variety of cultures. In her performance of "Y'Mei HaChanukah," Friedman infuses a reg- gae flavor to this Hebrew song. In "Hava Narimah," NET the tune recalls that of a lullaby heard long ago, and her rendition of'"S'vivon" fea- tures an infec- tious salsa beat. There's even a Middle-Eastern inspired cut ("Mi Y'maleil") and a whimsical cut ("The Latke Song") that harkens back to the disco era. The CD also features Friedman's unique interpretation of the Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary fame) song "Light One Candle," plus a won- derful rendition of "Maoz Tzur."
