"No one ever really leaves New York.

hile some Jews from
"Jewish New York"
have moved west to
live in "Jewish
Detroit?' (and environs), most of
them still miss the Big Apple.
The thing I miss most about New
York is a lean pastrami sandwich,"
exclaimed Dr. Jack Shapiro of
Bloomfield Township, who, with his
wife, Mickey, moved here from New
York more than 40 years ago. She still
longs for knishes, hot dogs and corn
on the cob, available from the street
vendors who used to push carts, with
their chimneys cooking the kosher-
style food right on the spot.
The food, especially of the leg-
endary Lower East Side of
Manhattan, and the "city life" were
cited as the things missed most by
local Jewish residents who are former
New Yorkers.

The Shapiros attribute the good
taste of New York food to "higher
quality water" than Detroit has. The
couple, who have been married for 49
years, settled in Detroit after he did
his hospital residency here, and still
enjoy visits to their former home,
"I also still miss the great New York
public transportation — the subways
and taxicabs," added Mickey.
Born in Brooklyn, Lisa Grant of
Bloomfield Hills left Scarsdale, a
New York City suburb, and came
here 40 years ago when she married
Oakland Probate Judge Barry Grant.
She's also the mother of Oakland
Circuit Judge Nanci Grant.
still miss those delicious kosher
pickles in the large barrels on the
Lower East Side, where the lox and
smoked fish taste entirely different,"
she said, "and places like Lundy's
Seafood Restaurant in Brooklyn and
Zabar's gourmet market on the
Upper West Side.
"But there's a lot more to New
York than Jewish foods," said Grant.
"There is the great variety of muse-
ums
many more than in Detroit;
