JUDAIC STUDY TOUR
UKRAINE AND RUSSIA: A STUDY EN CONTRASTS
MAY 2-16, 2004
Dr. Zvi Gitelman, Professor of
Political Science and Judaic Studies
at the University of Michigan, will
lead an in depth Judaica tour to
Ukraine and Russia: A Study in
Contrasts. Although Jews have lived
in Ukraine for hundreds of years,
until 1917, only a privileged few
were permitted to live in Russia
Brodsky "Shul", Kiev
proper. We will visit the cities of Kiev,
Moscow and St. Petersburg, home of several hundred thousand Jews, as well
as small towns and former shtetlakh, now nearly empty of Jews. The contrasts
between the opulence of the tsars of the past
and the poverty of the "masses", which will
become clear both in our visits and in the lec-
tures and commentaries by Dr. Gitelman, will
explain much about the turbulent history of
the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and
today's Russian Federation and Ukraine.
Currently, nearly 80 percent of the Jews of the
former Soviet Union reside in these two states.
Visiting Jewish institutions and meeting with
Jewish community leaders, we will observe the
renaissance of Jewish life as well as the pro-
found changes in the economies and political
life of the post-Soviet states.
