Four agencies offered to sign Young while he was still a student, but rather than committing himself to just one, he decided to freelance with two. Consequently, his senior-year work- load increased considerably. In addi- tion to classes and school productions, Young was now also flying to New York to audition for Broadway shows. "I went out for a bunch of things that I wasn't really right for," says Young. "But then right when I gradu- ated, it just happened to work out that a part that I was perfect for became available." The part was Marius. In order to prepare, Young spent the summer after graduation reading Victor Hugo's epic novel upon which the show is based. He also filled a notebook transcribing Marius' lyrics in the show ("older English and romanti- cized speech") into a more modern tongue, an exercise he says helped him feel a greater affinity for his character. Next came a brief two-week rehears- al period, where Young and a handful of others learned the show from scratch, amidst a troupe of actors, the majority of whom had come from the national tour and recently closed Broadway production. Young made his debut in Atlanta. His siblings couldn't attend (Dena, 21, is a student at George Washington University, and Doug, 16, is spending the semester in Israel), but his parents, Judy and Russell, sat front and center. "They were just blown away," says Young. Not that they doubted him. "They believe in me, but they didn't think my success would come so soon." "It's funny," he adds, "because in March I'm going to be doing the nation- al tour in Philadelphia, at the same place I first saw [Les Miz] and decided it was something I wanted to do." Young's next project is anyone's guess. On his agenda: recording a CD of musical theater and pop songs, work- shopping a new musical in New York and trying his hand at the silver screen. "If movie musicals keep going in the direction that they're going, I'd love to do something like that," he says. But Young ' s grandfather has some- thing else in mind. "My grandfather, continuously, every time LI see him, tries to get me to become a cantor, 'a chazzan,' as he says." Young says he might consider it in the future, but for now, his heart belongs to the theater. As for any 12-year-old future per- formers he might inspire along the way, Young offers some words of advice: "If there's anything else in the world you could see yourself doing, do it," he says. "But you can do anything you want if you try hard enough." ❑ To find out more about Josh Young, log on to the Web at www.josh young.corn.
